What is it with Windows?

Let’s start with the facts (mam). I don’t like Microsoft. I think that they’ve lost their way with Windows and they are making their bad decisions more and more visible. I’ve disliked Microsoft since I was a Microsoft Developer working with VB4/5/6, ASP etc. But the thing is I’ve never actually written down the reasons why I don’t like them. Many of the reasons are now history of course, but some aren’t. So I’ve now decided to start a list. It won’t be a list of niggles, it’ll be a list of things that not only can I justify as not making sense, but things that Microsoft really can’t have missed but still haven’t fixed.

The other thing to point out is that I don’t own any Window’s laptops. I have a couple in my possession because I have to use them for work, but I don’t own any for personal use. I’m a fan of Ubuntu and Linux in general. It took me years and years to make the full and irreversible change to Linux but I finally made it in about 2007 after about eight attempts. Each time I tried I’d end up finding one app that I could only find for Windows and I’d have to switch back. Then I’d wait six months and try again.

So, the list. It’s only just a become a list but as I am reminded of more and more things, so the list will be updated and republished.

  1. It’s the only OS that when I specifically tell it that I want to turn off my computer, deliberately starts a process, the first message from which is Don’t turn off your computer
  2. Windows finally has a decent print screen app, which to activate needs me to press Windows + Shift + S when there is a perfectly good button labelled Print Screen which does nothing.
  3. Windows still doesn’t understand that when I unplug monitors from my system, I would really prefer that it didn’t try and open windows onto those monitors which no longer exist. I’ve discovered that Alt + Space allows me to drag a window back onto a place where it can actually be seen, but really, what is so difficult in making sure that when opening or restoring a window it needs to end up somewhere where I will be able to see it. That is to say on a monitor that still physically exists.
  4. We used to have an option on the right-click menu of a window for Always on Top. Where did that go? It’s incredibly useful for smaller or pop up windows to stop them getting hidden behind much larger ones. Linux still has it. Can we have it back please?
